The urban design of the San Marcello PIRP envisioned implementation in two phases. The second one consists of a ‘building compound’ between the church of San Marcello and the garden of Villa Giustiniani, suburban patrician residence of the late 19th century. The Three parallel buildings occupy a lot obtained from the demolition of a 1970s school with energy and structural safety problems. The volumes are slipped between them to restore to sociality a place open along Omodeo Street. At the same time, they are crossed by a ground-floor pedestrian path to connect via Fortunato with via Fanelli, an ancient and important access road to the city center. The main body is intended for private housing along Fortunato Street and commercial activities facing the public space. The other two bodies constitute the public portion of the intervention and contain offices and a front office of the Municipality of Bari.
The design of the fronts gives the volumes a unified appearance while adapting to the different functions contained (residences, stores, offices and rooms for city institutions).
