Design competition. Candidate project
The overarching goal of the entire proposal is to bring life back to Porta Napoli. To inhabit a place and make it as welcoming as a home, it must be equipped with efficient services (infrastructure) and endowed with environmental quality (architecture).
By limiting the use of environmentalist rhetoric, the project stems from the combination of infrastructural strategies and architectural quality, without which the expected improvements would remain hostage to a realization lacking in social revival.
The project plan begins with an infrastructural solution in three key points to overcome the critical issues of the Porta Napoli district and the surrounding areas included in the competition brief. It identifies a triangle of agile urban infrastructures that will connect Porta Napoli to the rest of the city and incorporate within its perimeter the initiatives and vitality of the city's most innovative communities, both economically and socially:
1. Remove the elevated bypass toward SS100 (the road to Massafra) and Via Porto Mercantile;
2. Construct two new bridges for entry and exit from Isola Madre;
3. Isolate the stone bridge from private traffic and dedicate it to pedestrians, public transport, and slow traffic.
