Design competition. Award-winning project (fourth place)
The new San Giovanni di Dio Neighborhood Market is located within the dense, predominantly residential urban fabric of the Monteverde Nuovo district, occupying the entire lot provided by the competition. The square, the market, and the terrace enhance the public space offering in this urban quadrant of Rome.
The three horizontal levels serve different functions without creating interference between the basement (parking and water reserves), the ground floor (market and services), and the roof (photovoltaic panels and protection from weather conditions). The design is clear and regular, enhancing the site's characteristics and reaffirming its role as a center for social life.
The functional aspects of the project are divided into two broad categories: confined activities (enclosed and partially enclosed spaces) and open areas (pedestrian spaces for users and citizens). Both are sheltered under a large roof, ensuring protection, visibility amidst the city's fragmentation, and facilitating the exchange of goods, services, and social interactions typical of markets.
