The Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) at UC Berkeley supports the storage and accessibility needs of the entire University of California library system. With both UC Regional Library Facilities nearing capacity, Phase 4 expands the NRLF’s Richmond Field Station site by 27,700 square feet—adding space for three million additional volume-equivalents through high-density 30-foot shelving.
Designed for efficiency, flexibility, and resilience, the addition ensures long-term scalability while meeting strict storage conditions. The facility’s essential archive functions are supported by energy-efficient mechanical systems, enhanced envelope insulation, and improved vapor barrier performance—allowing for optimal preservation while reducing environmental impact. The structure is engineered to remain operational after a major earthquake.
New administrative spaces with daylight and views support staff comfort and functionality. A thoughtful detail brings deeper meaning to the design: the exterior siding pattern references ISBN barcodes from selected book titles chosen by the client, including Mountains of California and It’s a Book.
Despite the program’s energy demands, the project achieved LEED Gold certification by integrating sustainability throughout. Native habitat preservation was also prioritized in the site design, further reinforcing UC Berkeley’s commitment to stewardship and innovation.
