Revitalizing a historic campus to meet the needs of today’s students while honoring its past.
EHDD provided architectural and infrastructure modernization services for this multi-phase renewal of a 25-acre, historically significant campus at UC Berkeley listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally home to the California Schools for the Deaf and Blind, this Spanish Colonial Revival complex was repurposed in 1980 for university use and renamed the Clark Kerr Campus, providing student housing, a conference center, and other uses.
The two-phase renewal project restored and renovated seven dormitory and suite buildings with full upgrades to building and site infrastructure. The scope included comprehensive fire and life-safety improvements and accessibility upgrades, all of which were delivered with deep respect for the site’s historic character. Outdated, non-historic interiors were modernized to reflect contemporary student living needs while retaining key architectural elements.
The design seamlessly integrates modern utilities and sustainability strategies without compromising the site’s heritage. Infrastructure systems were updated to support long-term resilience, while site-sensitive repairs preserved the integrity of the historic fabric.
The renewed campus enhances student life by creating safe, accessible, and comfortable living environments—all within a unique, historic campus that celebrates UC Berkeley’s rich history and ongoing evolution.
