A bold convergence of art, architecture, and engineering at the cultural heart of UC Berkeley.
The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) is an 83,000-square-foot facility that combines adaptive reuse and new construction to create a vibrant, multi-disciplinary cultural destination in downtown Berkeley. EHDD served as Executive Architect in collaboration with design architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro, bringing deep technical expertise to one of the Bay Area’s most architecturally and structurally complex museum projects.
The design incorporates a WPA-era printing press building and introduces a striking new addition that mediates between historic and contemporary forms. Below-grade galleries extend into the water table, while the Osher Theater—hovering over a seismic void less than two miles from the Hayward Fault—showcases EHDD’s ability to deliver innovative solutions under challenging conditions.
BAMPFA supports traditional and experimental modes of exhibition, research, and performance. Spaces include flexible galleries, storage, and conservation facilities; a 33-seat screening room; and a 232-seat theater equipped with Meyer Sound’s Constellation system for immersive audio. A two-story multipurpose venue supports dance, lectures, and live music, while a large exterior LED screen broadcasts programming outdoors, activating the museum’s urban edge.
Certified LEED Silver, the project redefines the museum experience while advancing sustainability, interdisciplinary learning, and public engagement.
