A forest-integrated housing community that balances sustainability, student life, and natural beauty.
The East Campus Infill Housing project at the University of California, Santa Cruz provides 600 new student beds while preserving and enhancing the character of its redwood forest setting. Situated between existing colleges and student apartments, the 210,000-square-foot facility strengthens campus connectivity and fosters a sense of community through carefully integrated outdoor plazas and shared program spaces.
The housing complex includes a café, market, mail hub, technology center, student lounges, and laundry rooms—each positioned to activate adjacent pedestrian pathways and promote interaction. EHDD worked closely with diverse stakeholder groups, including College and University Housing Services and students, to shape the program through a collaborative workshop process. The design prioritizes flexibility, comfort, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Community-building features include a dual-purpose student market that supports both retail and an outdoor student-run organic market, and a rooftop bike shelter that doubles as outdoor café seating. Environmental stewardship is embedded throughout the design, with strategies such as rainwater harvesting, stormwater management, passive ventilation, and the use of recycled, low-VOC materials. The result is a housing community that aligns with the University’s values of sustainability, student well-being, and stewardship of the natural environment.
