A multigenerational, net-zero-ready residence that blends indoor-outdoor living with Passive House strategies.
The Kentfield Residence was designed as a “forever home” for a family of four—flexible enough to accommodate teenage children, empty nesters, future grandchildren, and frequent guests. The home centers around a south-facing courtyard that acts as an outdoor living room, embracing Kentfield’s signature climate and views. The layout organizes living spaces into three distinct wings. The western wing includes a master suite and guest room on the ground floor, with two teen bedrooms above. The northern wing houses communal living and dining areas that open directly to the courtyard, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor experience. The eastern wing features a series of connected family spaces, including the kitchen, family room, and office—designed without doors to support flow and informal gathering.
The home was built using energy-efficient Passive House principles, featuring a super-insulated envelope, a high-efficiency furnace, and an energy recovery ventilator that recycles interior conditioned air. A rooftop photovoltaic array powers nearly all of the home’s energy needs. Landscape design supports water conservation with bioswales for on-site stormwater management and underground water tanks that store well-water for irrigating native, drought-tolerant plantings.
The design embodies the client’s goals for long-term sustainability, aging-in-place, and generational living, all while delivering a comfortable, energy-efficient home in harmony with its natural surroundings.
