A flexible and community-centered residence designed to welcome first-year students.
Housing 4: The Summits at UC Merced is a 115,000-square-foot residence hall that houses over 350 predominantly first-year students. Located adjacent to the academic core, the project plays a key role in helping new students integrate into campus life through thoughtful, community-oriented design.
EHDD’s approach fosters connection at multiple scales, organizing student rooms into smaller clusters that form intermediary “block” communities within larger floor neighborhoods. Each floor includes a mix of quiet study nooks and vibrant central lounges—encouraging both focus and interaction. These community lounges serve as architectural anchors with distinct forms that bring variety and transparency to the building’s façade.
The project’s flexibility allows each floor and wing to function semi-independently, offering adaptable living arrangements that support evolving campus needs. A shared ground-floor amenity zone activates the surrounding courtyard and creates continuity with adjacent housing developments. Rooftop photovoltaics further enhance building performance, aligning with the university’s sustainability goals. The Summits is more than a residence hall—it is a living-learning environment designed to foster belonging, autonomy, and resilience in UC Merced’s growing student community.
