A charming working bakery that connects visitors to craft, culture, and the heart of San Francisco’s waterfront.
Boudin at the Wharf is a 25,500-square-foot bakery located near San Francisco’s Pier 39. EHDD collaborated with Engstrom Design Group to design a modern facility for Boudin Bakery that respects the industrial character of the historic waterfront.
The two-story building features a transparent façade along Jefferson Street, revealing bakery operations and interior activity to passersby. Red awnings reflect the character of the street and tie the building to its surroundings. The first floor houses a working bakery, retail area, and deli, while the second floor includes a café, bar, exhibits, and a self-guided bakery tour.
Outdoor seating at the west entrance provides seasonal dining options, while a functioning flour silo marks the east end. Adjacent surface parking and bicycle facilities serve both visitors and staff. The design balances functional operations, public engagement, and contextual sensitivity in a compact, high-traffic urban site.
