A transformative expansion uniting art, architecture, and public experience in the heart of San Francisco.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) expansion nearly tripled the size of the original museum, adding over 170,000 square feet of gallery space and redefining the institution’s connection to the city. EHDD served as Associate Architect in partnership with lead designer Snøhetta, providing services from entitlement through construction for the 460,700-square-foot, LEED Gold–certified cultural landmark.
As Architect of Record for all visitor amenities, performance venues, and interactive public areas, EHDD led the design of the Phyllis Wattis Theater—a flexible, premier space for film, lectures, and live performance that physically and symbolically bridges the original Mario Botta–designed building and the contemporary expansion. EHDD also oversaw the integration of interactive and digital design experiences that activate the public pathways running through the museum’s lower levels, offering free access to art and programs in a welcoming civic setting.
The expansion reimagines how a modern museum interfaces with its community. It offers porous connections to the surrounding urban fabric and dramatically expands SFMOMA’s ability to deliver contemporary art, education, and performance in new ways. EHDD’s deep experience with cultural institutions and complex technical coordination contributed to a seamless and highly impactful result.
