A landmark renovation that transforms a historic medical education building for modern academic use.
Originally constructed in 1932, the Clinical Sciences Building at UCSF is a seven-story structure that has long served the university’s medical sciences campus. EHDD’s comprehensive seismic renovation reimagines the 110,240-square-foot building to meet modern academic, resiliency, and sustainability goals while preserving its historic character.
The renovation includes a complete interior remodel, with much of the building repurposed to provide flexible office space for clinical faculty and staff. The new “hybrid” workspace design integrates the benefits of both open and enclosed offices, creating an environment conducive to collaboration and focused work. On the lower two levels, flexible classrooms and multi-purpose spaces support dynamic teaching and learning experiences with integrated technology.
A new circulation cut through the building introduces a north-south connection between Parnassus Avenue and Saunders Court, improving pedestrian flow and enhancing the building’s relationship to the surrounding campus. The project not only meets current seismic safety standards, but also renews the building’s original sustainable design intent through energy-efficient systems and LEED Gold certification.
