A collaborative renewal of a beloved campus icon—balancing legacy, sustainability, and student experience.
The Kresge College Renewal at UC Santa Cruz is a comprehensive redevelopment of one of the university’s most architecturally distinctive residential colleges. In partnership with Truebeck Construction, EHDD is leading this design-build effort to preserve Kresge’s unique identity while expanding its capacity and environmental performance. The project includes 124,000 square feet of new construction and 32,800 square feet of renovation across 14 buildings.
Seven existing buildings will be demolished and rebuilt using mass timber and prefabricated components, with each gaining an additional story. Two new structures—a mid-rise housing building and a dedicated Town Hall community building—will support student life and expand residential capacity. Five other buildings are being renovated for modern use, all within a campus deeply embedded in the redwood forest.
Inheriting a schematic plan that exceeded the budget, EHDD collaborated closely with the contractor and trade partners to identify cost-effective solutions while upholding design integrity. Strategic moves such as redistributing units to standardize floor layouts and relocating a six-story building off a structured podium led to major cost savings and improved site integration. Even HVAC placement was reimagined to reduce costs and improve performance, allowing for added student amenities like a game room.
The result is a resilient, resource-efficient student community designed through an integrated, ego-free process—advancing the future of Kresge without compromising its spirit.
