A coastal research hub advancing marine science, field-based learning, and ecological stewardship.
The Coastal Biology Building at UC Santa Cruz is a 40,000-square-foot academic and research facility located on the 97-acre Marine Sciences Campus, part of the Wells Fargo Coastal Science Research Center. EHDD provided architectural, interior design, and master planning services for this ground-up project, delivered via Construction Manager at Risk. The facility supports the university’s Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), with a focus on coastal conservation, climate change research, and habitat restoration.
Situated near the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the building connects faculty and students to surrounding wetlands, lagoons, and coastal habitats. Its proximity to these resources reinforces UCSC’s commitment to field-based instruction and research collaboration. The program includes 20 primary research labs, common analytical labs, 43 research offices, a seawater core lab, and a central seminar room. More than 8,000 square feet of greenhouse and auxiliary buildings extend the facility’s ecological capabilities.
Designed to integrate with its coastal environment, the building emphasizes sustainability and scientific exchange. Infrastructure upgrades enhance campus resilience, and LEED Gold certification reflects the project’s environmental performance. A recipient of the SCUP/AIA-CAE Honor Award and the Architecture MasterPrize, the building has been nationally recognized for excellence in educational design.
