"An energy-efficient, high-performance lab facility designed to coexist with its redwood forest surroundings.
The Biomedical Sciences Building at UC Santa Cruz is an interdisciplinary laboratory that serves as a model for energy-efficient design in complex, high-intensity research environments. Nestled within a protected redwood grove, the 94,695-square-foot project seamlessly integrates advanced building systems with the surrounding landscape to minimize environmental impact and maximize user comfort.
The LEED Gold building’s layout zones different functions according to their specific energy and environmental needs. While labs and vivariums meet rigorous air quality and safety standards through evidence-based design strategies, office and common areas are optimized for natural ventilation, daylighting, and thermal comfort, taking full advantage of Santa Cruz’s mild climate.
This strategic, systems-based approach results in significant energy savings while maintaining the highest standards for laboratory safety and performance. The project demonstrates that even energy-intensive building types can be designed with sustainability, resilience, and site sensitivity at the forefront."
