The Sprague Hall Biomedical Laboratory Building at UC Irvine is a competition-winning laboratory building that completes the gateway to an emerging biomedical research precinct on the Irvine campus. Strategically paired with an adjacent building, Sprague Hall creates a unified presence that supports te university’s growing research enterprise.
Designed to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, the building includes open research labs, wet and dry support spaces, offices, and conference areas for faculty and lab personnel. A dramatic three-story atrium serves as the building’s focal point and social heart, connecting all non-laboratory functions—lounges, library, and meeting rooms—and fostering interaction among researchers.
A transparent entrance lobby and lounges activate the plaza and welcome the campus community. At night, the illuminated façade and interior become a glowing beacon, reinforcing the building’s role as both a destination and landmark within the biomedical precinct.
Sprague Hall balances the technical demands of advanced research with a focus on user experience. The design cultivates collaboration, visibility, and movement between disciplines—strengthening research outcomes and establishing a sense of community. EHDD’s approach demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can advance scientific innovation while creating meaningful spaces for human connection.
