High-density student housing designed to integrate seamlessly into a historic residential neighborhood.
EHDD designed two new residential halls for UC Berkeley that deliver 874 beds in a mix of dormitory and apartment-style housing within the university’s Southside Area—a pedestrian-oriented, architecturally eclectic neighborhood. The 277,316-square-foot project responds sensitively to its context, carefully balancing scale, massing, and material character to ensure compatibility with adjacent nine-story towers and smaller historic homes.
The buildings step from four to seven stories in height and feature sloped roof forms, bay windows, elevated porches, and articulated façades that reflect the surrounding urban fabric. Street-oriented entries, exterior staircases, and landscaped walkways foster connection between the student community and the broader neighborhood, creating a safe, lively, and walkable environment.
A key sustainable strategy was the use of urban infill, locating students within walking distance of campus and close to public transportation, reducing reliance on cars. The project includes ample bicycle storage and exceeds California’s Title 24 energy performance standards by 20%.
EHDD’s design brings together thoughtful contextual integration, smart sustainability, and a focus on livability to support the university’s mission and the well-being of its student residents.
