High-performance student housing that blends modern living with a historic campus context.
EHDD served as Architect of Record, in collaboration with Behnisch Architekten, for Maximino Martinez Commons—an undergraduate student housing complex at UC Berkeley. The six-story, 147,000-square-foot facility was developed as part of the university’s 2020 Long Range Development Plan and is located directly across from the historic Anna Head School campus.
Martinez Commons offers 416 beds in a mix of suite-style and apartment-style units, along with extensive common areas that promote academic and social engagement. Amenities include collaboration rooms, lounge spaces, and a student computer lab, all designed to foster community and support student success.
EHDD led substantial revisions to the original design in order to bring the project into full code compliance and develop fully coordinated, constructible construction documents. Our work ensured that the project met stringent safety and accessibility standards while preserving the architectural integrity of the original concept. The building also achieved LEED Gold certification, incorporating sustainable strategies such as natural ventilation, daylighting, and efficient building systems.
By seamlessly integrating sustainable design, student-centered amenities, and code-compliant execution, Martinez Commons strengthens UC Berkeley’s commitment to providing high-quality campus housing within a dense, historic urban setting.
