A seismic retrofit that safeguards a historic academic landmark while upgrading for accessibility, safety, and long-term use.
Giannini Hall is a four-story concrete academic building located on the UC Berkeley campus, originally designed in 1930 by William C. Hays. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is one of Berkeley’s most historically significant structures and serves as a home to the College of Natural Resources and general classrooms.
EHDD was tasked with modernizing the building to correct seismic deficiencies while preserving its historic integrity. The project also addressed critical fire and life safety upgrades, ADA accessibility improvements, and long-deferred maintenance needs. A major focus was maintaining the building’s original character—both interior and exterior—while integrating contemporary building systems and structural solutions.
Working within the constraints of a historic envelope, the design team reinforced structural resilience and introduced improvements that bring the building into compliance with current code, all while ensuring minimal visual impact. The retrofit not only enhances campus safety and longevity but also supports ongoing academic programming in a facility that remains true to its architectural legacy. The project achieved LEED Silver certification, demonstrating EHDD’s ability to marry sustainability goals with sensitive preservation in one of the UC system’s most iconic settings.
