A luminous new heart for interdisciplinary learning, designed for equity, connection, and sustainability.
Stevenson Hall at Sonoma State University is a transformative renovation project in Rohnert Park, California. EHDD provided architectural services for this 140,000-square-foot academic facility, delivered via design-build. The redesigned building supports the university’s mission of equity, inclusion, and interdisciplinary collaboration—bringing together departments, services, and student resources under one transparent and welcoming roof.
Previously cloaked in heavy concrete walls, Stevenson Hall now features an open, high-performance façade that allows daylight to pour in by day and activity to radiate out by night. The centerpiece of the project is a light-filled atrium enclosed by a glass roof—created by enclosing the former courtyard—which fosters informal gathering and connection across departments. Each floor opens onto this central space, improving wayfinding while reinforcing a shared sense of belonging.
The building’s warm, modern interiors reflect a 21st-century learning environment, offering flexible, collaborative zones that support a diversity of academic and student needs. A new high-performance envelope significantly improves energy use, daylighting, and air quality, helping the project earn LEED Gold and Fitwel One Star certification.
Winner of multiple regional and national design awards—including the 2024 DBIA Design Excellence and Innovation Awards—Stevenson Hall is now a visible and vital centerpiece for the Sonoma State campus.
