A dignified civic presence that reflects local identity while advancing access to justice.
The Siskiyou County Courthouse brings a new symbol of civic presence to downtown Yreka, California. This 71,017-square-foot, LEED Gold facility houses five courtrooms, judges' chambers, administrative offices, a jury assembly area, and a central basement holding facility with in-custody access and secure parking.
EHDD’s design approach emphasizes security, functionality, and a welcoming experience, all while reflecting Yreka’s unique character. The building’s massing bridges the commercial edge of Fourth Street with the neighboring residential context, using wood prominently in the entry canopy and interior ceilings as a tribute to the area’s timber industry heritage. A Self-Help legal center enhances accessibility for underserved residents, while daylighting, views, and calming interiors support the courthouse’s role as a supportive, rather than punitive, institution.
The project was phased around prolonged state budget constraints, requiring multiple redesigns without compromising essential values. Stakeholder engagement—including the Judicial Council of California, judges, and court staff—ensured long-term alignment with justice system goals. Climate-responsive strategies—such as advanced HVAC systems, water conservation, and fire-resilient design—support year-round performance and public safety.
Designed to withstand regional extremes and act as a community shelter in emergencies, the courthouse not only enhances justice services, but also symbolizes renewal and resilience for a rural community navigating economic change.
