A new hub for wellness, community, and affordable student living on the SFSU campus. San Francisco State University’s West Grove Commons and Gator Health Center/ Yerba Buena Dining Hall comprise a twophase design-build project that establishes a new student-focused anchor on the western edge of campus. EHDD provided architectural services for the ground-up construction, totaling nearly 170,000 square feet across two buildings. The first phase delivers 750 beds of affordable housing for first-year students in a six-story residence hall. Organized in a pod-based layout, the design encourages small-group connections where students can sleep, study, and socialize within intimate clusters. A large central courtyard is framed by the housing structure, with one end activated by the residential entry and the other by a flexible, indoor-outdoor dining pavilion. To meet the project’s ambitious schedule commitment—delivering 750 beds in just two years—EHDD strategically split the housing and public-facing programs into separate buildings. This allowed housing to proceed on an accelerated timeline, while phase two—the 49,000-square-foot dining and health center—was developed with greater attention to the complexity of its clinical and communal uses. The Gator Health Center includes triage space, exam rooms, and a health promotion classroom. Together, the two buildings create a vibrant new campus gateway that supports student wellness, community connection, and long-term university growth.
