A civic gateway reconnecting people, place, and parklands at the foot of the Golden Gate.
Presidio Tunnel Tops is a landmark public project that transforms 14 acres of new parkland atop the Presidio Parkway tunnels, reconnecting Crissy Field with the historic heart of the Presidio. In collaboration with James Corner Field Operations, EHDD provided architectural and interior design services for multiple components of the project, including the 17,000-square-foot Youth Campus, the Field Station, and the renovation of the Transit Center.
The Youth Campus, situated at the base of the bluff, is a dynamic hub for environmental education and youth programming led by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service. Historic Building 603 and a newly constructed Lab building house classrooms, offices, and educational labs, while the Field Station offers hands-on interpretive exhibits focused on ecology, history, and archaeology. The adjacent Outpost playscape invites children as young as three to engage directly with nature through unstructured, sensory-rich exploration.
Atop the bluff, EHDD’s renovation of the Transit Center enhances visitor amenities and accessibility with expanded, gender-inclusive restrooms and a sheltered patio with panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Locally harvested Monterey cypress clads both historic and new structures, anchoring the design in place and purpose. Opened in 2022, the LEED Gold project now welcomes over seven million visitors annually, establishing itself as a celebrated civic destination.
