A vibrant new home for marine life and a platform for ocean conservation in the Pacific Northwest.
The Pacific Seas Aquarium at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium (PDZA) in Tacoma, Washington, is a 32,000-square-foot ground-up facility that redefines marine education and visitor engagement through immersive design and sustainability. EHDD provided architecture and interior design services for the new building, which replaces the Zoo’s original North Pacific Aquarium and significantly expands its exhibit offerings.
The aquarium highlights the ecology of the Pacific Ocean, beginning with local Puget Sound species and culminating in the dramatic 250,000-gallon Baja Bay exhibit—home to scalloped hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, and schools of tropical fish. A towering kelp forest and a variety of interactive displays immerse visitors in diverse marine environments while reinforcing PDZA’s mission of wildlife conservation.
Designed to enhance both public understanding and operational performance, the building features a high-efficiency drum filtration system that reduces energy demands across life support systems. Interpretive messaging throughout the exhibits encourages visitors to see themselves as active participants in ocean health and stewardship. As a civic destination and educational resource, the Pacific Seas Aquarium connects regional identity with global environmental values through storytelling, sustainability, and awe-inspiring design.
