Field Paoli partnered with the founders of Pickle Athletics to bring Oakland’s premier indoor pickleball social club to life, guiding the project from early site selection and feasibility through entitlement, space planning, and architectural design. The team ultimately transformed a long-vacant industrial building in the Temescal district—strategically located near MacArthur BART and the neighborhood’s vibrant retail and dining corridor—into a dynamic new community destination.
Aligning with Field Paoli’s mission to create vibrant social spaces at every scale, Pickle Athletics is conceived as more than a pickleball venue—it is a modern “third place” where sport, wellness, and community seamlessly intersect. The program brings together four premium indoor pickleball courts with a range of hospitality and wellness amenities, including a lounge, bar, food service featuring a curated menu, wine and beer offerings, sauna, showers, and dedicated fitness areas. Together, these elements support both active play and extended social engagement in a cohesive, highly activated environment.
Pickle Athletics reimagines the fast-growing sport as a social experience, blending year-round play with spaces designed for gathering, working, and unwinding. Designed as much for connection as for competition, the club fosters a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere rooted in community.
As a women-, LGBTQ-, and Black-owned business—the first Black-owned pickleball club in the country—the project represents a meaningful expansion of access and representation within the sport while contributing to the cultural and economic vitality of the neighborhood.
In close collaboration with Kady & Maryanna, Field Paoli’s architectural vision established the framework for this adaptive reuse, creating a cohesive environment that supports both athletic performance and social interaction. The project team—comprised entirely of women-owned businesses—includes interior design by IDF Studio, construction by Eric F. Anderson, and commercial real estate services by Chromata Retail.
