The citizens of Berkeley recently passed a bond measure to renovate or replace all of their branch libraries. After looking at options to retain all or part of the original building at the site, the library board decided that the best approach for the South branch would be to build an entirely new building on the site, creating a much stronger civic presence, and accommodating all of the program in a single story, state of the art facility.
The new library, which has been registered for LEED Gold Certification, is unique in that it includes the city’s Tool Lending Library, which allows residents to check out tools of all sizes from screwdrivers to augers. Other features include a community meeting room on the corner, an all new teen area, and greatly expanded access to technology including laptop computers that can be checked out for use anywhere in the building.
