A refreshed arrival experience welcoming the next generation of coastal explorers.
As part of a broader master plan for the Oregon Coast Aquarium, EHDD led the redesign of the Entrance, Ticketing, and Lobby areas to better serve contemporary visitors and enhance overall flow through the campus. Located on an estuary in Newport, Oregon, the Aquarium has long been a regional destination for marine education and interpretation.
Originally completed in the early 1990s, the facility’s public spaces had seen minimal updates in nearly three decades. A 2018 Strategic Planning process identified the need to modernize guest services and create a more welcoming, intuitive, and accessible experience for all visitors. EHDD worked in close partnership with the Aquarium’s in-house education team to develop design interventions focused on visitor circulation, ticketing efficiency, and hospitality improvements, including updated café and coffee areas and play spaces for young children.
Delivered across two major construction phases, the 70,000-square-foot scope has been carefully sequenced to ensure the Aquarium remains fully operational during the remodel. The new entrance experience aligns with the Aquarium’s mission to connect guests with the Oregon coast’s unique ecology through design that is inviting, clear, and reflective of its setting.
