The residential building is part of the Integrated Plan of Redevelopment of the Suburbs, San Marcello PIRP, whose objective is to densify the building fabric to meet the development needs of this part of the city of Bari initiated with the first post-war neighborhood of public housing and the university campus, followed then by private housing lacking significant qualities that ended up encompassing over the years some pre-existing buildings of some value with the gardens still present.
Realized as the First Phase of the San Marcello PIRP, the building is located in between two important green areas of the city, the Botanical Garden of the University Campus and the park of Villa Capriati, a patrician residence of the late 19th century. The two volumes parallelepipeds are arranged at the intersection of two streets recognizing their hierarchy and paths. The building bodies, differing in height, are joined at second floors. The many functions contained: dwellings, stores, offices, garages, and the different exposures of the fronts are encompassed by extrados frames placed as a filter between the inside privacy and the surrounding urban space marked by current post-World War II construction. The shape elementary of the main volumes, arranged at the minimum distance required by the Building Regulations, reconstitutes the alignment with the adjoining buildings and measures the expressive potential of the site in both height and plan.
The urban design evident from the general plan of the neighborhood envisions the construction of another compound building near the church of San Marcello (PIRP Phase 2).
