A master plan and multi-phase transformation for one of the world’s most visited aquariums.
EHDD partnered with the John G. Shedd Aquarium to prepare a 20-year master plan and guide key capital projects that would support the institution’s growth into the next century. The approach balanced modernization with reverence for the aquarium’s iconic Beaux-Arts architecture, enhancing the visitor experience while respecting the scale, materials, and character of the historic structure.
EHDD collaborated with the aquarium’s in-house team to design and deliver several major capital projects, including the “Go Overboard!” gift store and two signature exhibits: Amazon Rising and Wild Reef: Sharks at Shedd. These immersive experiences combine storytelling, interpretive graphics, and life support systems to bring global aquatic ecosystems to life. Caribbean Reef, which opened in 1999, restored the rotunda’s original grandeur while adding a multimedia educational component.
Amazon Rising, which opened in 2000, transforms existing galleries into a winding journey through the seasonal dynamics of the Amazon River. Wild Reef, opened in 2003, explores the coral reefs of the Philippines and includes a 450,000-gallon shark tank that helped draw record attendance. Together, these projects mark a significant chapter in the aquarium’s evolution, positioning it as a leader in immersive environmental storytelling and exhibit design.
