EHDD’s comprehensive renovation of the 1928 Walter Ratcliff-designed Music Building revitalizes Mills College’s beloved Concert Hall while preserving its architectural legacy. The project modernized the 447-seat venue with expanded stage access, upgraded electronics, and improved acoustics, while seamlessly incorporating contemporary amenities into the building’s Spanish Revival character.
Acoustic improvements include new wall panels that maintain visual neutrality and enhance the hall’s sound quality—highlighting the building’s artistic features such as restored Raymond Boynton frescoes and choir loft murals. Accessibility was also prioritized: public areas were updated to meet ADA standards, and seating layouts were redesigned for inclusivity without compromising the hall’s historic integrity.
In addition to performance enhancements, the project included seismic retrofits and environmental system upgrades that were carefully integrated to avoid visual impact. New and renovated offices throughout the building were designed to reflect original architectural details, maintaining a consistent historic expression.
Despite a tight schedule and limited budget, the team delivered a complete transformation in just one year. EHDD’s disciplined approach—prioritizing early investigations, clear decision-making, and detailed documentation—ensured a successful outcome that enriches Mills College’s music program and campus life.
