Competition of ideas. Candidate project
The former Lupi di Toscana Barracks area forms a "green corridor" connecting the urbanized areas of Florence and Scandicci. The edges of this corridor are marked by the historic Via di Scandicci and Viale Pietro Nenni, which is served by Tram Line 1.
The peri-urban territory in the western quadrant of Florence, near the competition site, is characterized by large, specialized clusters: on one side, a commercial center; on the other, a major hospital complex. Between them, the former barracks stands as a third, massive built structure, its selfreferential layout shaped by its original military function.
This project is positioned at the heart of this system, acting as a mediator among its components. It aims to reduce the footprint and enhance the open and agricultural green spaces already present in the area.
The new development defines the urban character of both the neighborhood and the internal street that branches off Via di Scandicci. The new buildings follow two distinct patterns and serve two clear purposes: the cluster around the new Italianstyle piazza originates from the former command building, now repurposed for hospitality functions, along with smaller private residences lining the internal road. The remaining volumes are arranged along the periphery and are shaped by the regulatory standards required to equip the new settlement with essential public services.
