A vertical campus rooted in community activism and 21st-century learning.
The City College of San Francisco’s Chinatown/North Beach campus represents the culmination of over three decades of grassroots advocacy to bring accessible higher education to a historically underserved neighborhood. Located on just a quarter-acre site in the heart of Chinatown, the LEED Gold-certified project maximizes vertical density with a 14-story academic tower and a 4-story culinary annex, together accommodating over 4,000 students each day.
EHDD led the design of this transformative project, navigating a decade-long planning and stakeholder engagement process involving political leaders, preservationists, educators, and community members. The result is a compact, technologically advanced, and light-filled “vertical campus” that sensitively responds to its urban context.
The academic tower houses 39 classrooms and labs, administrative offices, a library, and a community room that opens to a terrace overlooking Portsmouth Square. The annex supports the school’s renowned culinary program with a teaching kitchen, community auditorium, classrooms, and a public café. Designed to respect the character of Chinatown, the Financial District, and the Jackson Square Historic District, the architecture balances modern learning environments with neighborhood identity.
The project’s ambitious sustainability and inclusion goals helped secure widespread support, and today the campus serves as both a cultural anchor and a gateway to opportunity in San Francisco’s most densely populated neighborhood.
