Guia Hill Pedestrian Tunnel: Connecting Macau Beneath the City
Located beneath one of Macau’s most prominent green spaces, the Guia Hill Pedestrian Tunnel forms part of a wider system designed to improve movement around the hill and between the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Designed by P&T Group, the project combines a 300-metre pedestrian tunnel with approximately 350 metres of footbridges and a series of vertical connections. Together, they create a continuous route linking the northern and southern sides of the city, including nearby residential and commercial districts.
Opened in 2022, the tunnel responds to the challenges of navigating a dense urban environment shaped by steep terrain, busy roads and changes in level. A 3.4-metre-wide pedestrian path runs through its centre, with travelators on both sides making the route more accessible and comfortable for everyday users.
The difference in elevation between the northern and southern entrances also contributes to the tunnel’s environmental performance. It creates a natural stack effect that draws fresh air through the passage, supporting its mechanical ventilation system and improving conditions below ground.
Inside, a gently curved ceiling establishes a continuous vaulted form along the length of the tunnel. White aluminium panels, ventilation grilles and linear lighting are arranged within a repeated rhythm, creating a bright and clearly defined route. The central lighting strip emphasises the direction of travel, while concealed lighting along the edges of the ceiling softens the transition between the walls and the vault above.
Macau’s architectural heritage is incorporated into the interior through a series of backlit perforated metal panels. These depict landmarks including Guia Lighthouse, the Ruins of St Paul’s, Na Tcha Temple, the Leal Senado Building, St Dominic’s Church and A-Ma Temple.
The images reflect the exchange between Chinese and Portuguese cultures that has shaped the city. From a distance, each scene appears as a recognisable architectural image; closer inspection reveals the individual perforations and points of warm light from which it is formed.
References to Macau’s public spaces continue across the floor. Abstract stone inlays create sweeping patterns inspired by the decorative paving found at historic sites throughout the city. Their curved geometry introduces movement into the otherwise linear passage and provides a visual counterpoint to the ordered ceiling and wall panels.
These cultural elements are integrated without compromising the tunnel’s primary purpose. Its generous width, travelators and barrier-free connections provide a practical route through the district, while its lighting, materials and artwork give the journey a distinct sense of place.
Rather than treating the tunnel as an isolated piece of transport infrastructure, the Guia Hill Pedestrian System connects it to the wider urban and natural landscape. The project improves access across the city while turning an everyday pedestrian route into an architectural experience rooted in Macau’s identity.
The project received an Honorable Mention at the 2024 Macau Architecture Awards.
