The Infinity Kite: Turning a Vietnamese Tradition into a Framework for Learning
The Infinity Kite is a concept masterplan for the University of Economics and Business in Hòa Lạc, Vietnam. Designed to support the university’s future growth, the proposal rethinks the campus as a connected landscape where formal education, independent study and everyday social interaction form part of the same learning experience.
The concept takes its starting point from the traditional Vietnamese flute kite, known as diều sáo. Long associated with rural life in northern Vietnam, the kite combines lightness and movement with a carefully balanced structure. These qualities provided more than a visual reference for the project: they became the basis of its planning logic.
The string of the kite is interpreted as a Knowledge Spine running east to west across the campus. This central route connects the academic buildings with the civic core, student residences and sports facilities, creating a clear structure through a large and complex site.
Along this spine, academic buildings are organised into a series of smaller learning clusters. Each functions as its own neighbourhood, bringing classrooms, lecture halls and research facilities together with courtyards, informal study areas and shared amenities. This arrangement makes the campus easier to navigate while creating opportunities for interaction between students, staff and different academic disciplines.
At the centre of the masterplan, a public forum forms the social heart of the university. It brings together administration, auditoriums, research spaces and the innovation hub around a shared civic space. An infinity-shaped circulation loop connects the different parts of the campus, expressing the idea that learning does not begin and end inside a classroom.
That principle continues through the architecture. Circulation spaces are treated as places to learn and meet, rather than simply routes between rooms. Broad staircases can accommodate presentations and informal lectures, while smaller areas of tiered seating support group discussions and individual study. Open foyers, terraces, project rooms and café spaces create further settings for students to work outside scheduled teaching hours.
Classrooms and lecture halls are planned to support different forms of education, from conventional teaching and large presentations to collaborative workshops, hybrid learning and video conferencing. Flexible layouts allow spaces to change as teaching methods and technology develop.
A network of elevated connections links the academic buildings at upper levels. These shaded walkways continue the learning environment into the landscape and create the potential for students to move through the tree canopy. Generous openings and transparent façades maintain visual connections between classrooms, circulation spaces, courtyards and planting.
The architecture responds to Vietnam’s climate through shaded arcades, sheltered routes and a close relationship between indoor and outdoor space. Rather than creating identity through a single monumental building, the proposal establishes a consistent architectural language across the campus, one shaped by daylight, ventilation, movement and landscape.
Water plays an equally important role in the masterplan. Existing low-lying and flood-prone areas are retained and developed as a connected system of streams, wetlands, lotus ponds, rain gardens and planted channels.
These elements capture and filter runoff from the academic and residential areas before it enters retention and detention ponds elsewhere on the site. During periods of heavy rainfall, the system helps manage peak water flow. At other times, it supports biodiversity, improves water quality and creates an educational landscape where environmental processes remain visible.
The planting strategy draws from the agricultural character of the region. Native trees create shade and form green buffers around the campus, while flowering species introduce seasonal colour within academic courtyards and public spaces. Lotus and other water-tolerant plants establish wetland habitats, and familiar fruit trees such as pomelo, longan and persimmon are incorporated into residential and social areas.
Together, these systems support the project’s wider ambition to become a next-generation sustainable campus. Buildings, landscape and infrastructure are planned as an interconnected system that can manage water, reduce energy demand, encourage low-carbon movement and support the wellbeing of students and staff.
The kite gives the campus a recognisable identity, but its real value lies in the structure it provides. It connects the university’s different programmes, organises future development and turns the spaces between buildings into an active part of campus life.
Through this approach, the Infinity Kite proposes a contemporary model for education in Vietnam, one rooted in cultural memory but shaped around changing ways of learning, working and living.
