The Village Scalabrini combines new residential construction annexed to St. Rita's Church, built in 1956 in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville neighbourhood of Montreal. The primary objective was to save the abandoned place of worship and create a true village welcoming a diverse community, from retired congregation fathers to neighbourhood families. The project was recognized at the 2024 Grands Prix du Design with 1 Gold, 2 Silver, and 2 Bronze certifications.
A symbiosis between the existing heritage architecture and the new building guided every design decision, with the new construction drawing directly from the church's architectural vocabulary. The 51-unit complex generates the revenue needed to subsidize the church's maintenance, while green spaces flank the forecourt to create a welcoming interface with the street.
The church will be transformed into a community centre connected to the residential building via an underground tunnel. Original woodwork, stained glass, terrazzo, and chandeliers are preserved alongside modern infrastructure and universal accessibility. A landscaped inner courtyard, communal gardens, and ground-floor terraces complete this integrated village within the city.
