The Club Saint-Denis marks the renewal of a private club that served as the social gathering place of Montreal's French-speaking elite for over 135 years. Set within a Victorian-era building with a significant Art Deco addition, the project created a coworking destination for members and their guests, anchored by a maximalist ballroom at its heart. The project was recognized at the 2024 Grands Prix du Design with a Gold certification in 5 categories.
Nearly all of the interior had been stripped bare over time, leaving exposed concrete, stainless steel hardware, and painted white gypsum as our canvas. The ballroom alone had preserved its original moldings, though surrounded by jarring contemporary elements. Our approach treated the project as a theatrical production, working primarily through custom millwork and furniture to organize the spaces with minimal structural intervention.
An ascending architectural promenade builds anticipation as visitors move through a concrete and glass entry hall treated as an art gallery, past a champagne reception desk in marble, brass and lacquer, through themed conference rooms and carefully curated vignettes, until the ballroom reveals itself like a speakeasy behind a green portal at the end of the journey.
Everything in the ballroom was designed from scratch, from fringed lounge sofas to a custom mural by an in-house artist. At the center stands a massive Rosa Onyx bar with a counter carved in inverted strata and an entirely stone back bar. Patterned wallpapers, noble woods, colored stones, and brass were combined in unexpected ways to achieve the maximalist effect the client envisioned.
