The Old Randle Early Childhood Education Center, located at 1650 30th Street SE in Washington DC, showcases an impressive blend of historic preservation and architectural design for educational facilities. Completed in 2022, this $14 million project revitalized a 1911 Elizabethan Tudor-style building, one of the oldest school structures east of the Anacostia River, supporting long-term community impact.
Spanning 20,865 square feet, the Center serves students from Pre-K3 to 5th grade, as well as infants and toddlers. Moya Design Partners designed the Center by retaining the building’s historic character while accommodating contemporary educational needs, reflecting inclusive design, human-centered design, and thoughtful design development. The new program included six classrooms, discovery spaces, and administrative offices.
MOYA’s team worked closely with regulatory agencies to sensitively restore original elements and overcome challenges in balancing historic preservation with modern safety standards.
Our design for the Center incorporated sustainable design strategies and achieved LEED Gold certification, reinforcing a commitment to sustainability, equity, and community engagement. This project exemplifies MOYA’s dedication to creating architectural environments that advance social change and nurture early childhood development.
