Diane’s House is a 42-unit affordable housing project in Washington DC’s Gateway neighborhood providing supportive housing for vulnerable women, including homeless veterans and survivors of domestic violence. The project reflects a commitment to social change through architecture.
MOYA served as architect for Diane’s House, with Federico Olivera-Sala leading the project as Design Principal-in-Charge. MOYA’s architectural design approach combined a green, community-centered design philosophy with visually compelling architecture — delivering a built environment of dignity and purpose for the building’s residents. The firm navigated a complex regulatory and zoning landscape to realize the project, managing the technical and procedural requirements necessary to achieve Enterprise Green Communities certification, and demonstrating that sustainable design and human-centered design remain achievable in contexts serving society’s most vulnerable populations.
The project integrates residential units with amenity spaces for vocational training, recovery programs, and health services. The development reinforces sustainability through a green roof, native plantings, and energy-efficient systems that enhance energy performance.
Completed in 2020, Diane’s House demonstrates how architectural design can advance equity and meaningful community impact while navigating complex zoning and regulatory challenges.
