For Mui Kee Congee, Create Architecture translates a story that began in the bustling streets of Mongkok in 1979 into a contemporary dining experience rooted in memory, place and tradition. Rather than treating heritage as a decorative layer, the design brings the character of Mui Kee’s Hong Kong origins into the space through a considered interplay of colour, material, graphic references and spatial atmosphere.
At the heart of the concept is the story of the sea. Fresh seafood has long been integral to Mui Kee’s signature congee, making the ocean an important point of departure for the interior. Blue accents and fish motifs subtly evoke the waters that connect Hong Kong’s culinary culture to its fishing heritage, while traditional mahjong references introduce another distinctly familiar element of everyday Hong Kong life. Together, these details create a visual language that feels nostalgic without becoming literal.
The iconic red signboard serves as a defining gesture, recalling the vivid storefronts and traditional food stalls of Mongkok where Mui Kee first established its identity. Against this, warm natural timber softens the palette, creating a sense of familiarity and domestic comfort. The result is a space that sits between the energy of a Hong Kong street stall and the intimacy of a contemporary neighbourhood eatery.
Photography and graphic elements further extend this narrative, allowing fragments of Mui Kee’s history to become part of the dining environment. An open kitchen adds another layer to the experience, placing the preparation of food within view and reinforcing the restaurant’s honest, unpretentious character. Meanwhile, generous glazing and a visually expressive frontage invite the surrounding streetscape into the restaurant, establishing a clear connection between interior and exterior.
The design deliberately avoids competing with what matters most: the food. Every material, motif and spatial intervention supports rather than overwhelms the culinary experience. Located at Shaw Plaza on Balestier Road, Mui Kee Congee brings a piece of Hong Kong’s culinary heritage into Singapore while establishing an identity of its own. Through Create Architecture’s design, history is not preserved behind glass; it is woven into the everyday experience of eating, gathering and remembering. The result is a restaurant where architecture becomes an extension of the brand’s story — familiar, expressive and, above all, comforting.
