**Attap Recast** is an exploration of how architecture can preserve the soul of a home while reshaping it for a new generation. Rather than beginning with a blank slate, the project embraces the memories embedded within the original residence, transforming them into the foundation of a contemporary tropical dwelling that celebrates identity, craftsmanship, and continuity.
The name *Attap Recast* reflects this philosophy. Inspired by the humble attap house that once defined Southeast Asia's domestic landscape, the project reinterprets its values rather than its appearance. Openness, natural ventilation, shaded living, and a close relationship with nature become the guiding principles of the design, translated into a residence that responds sensitively to Singapore's tropical climate and the evolving needs of modern family life.
Designed for a multigenerational household, the home balances privacy with togetherness through carefully considered spatial planning. Existing structural elements, including the first-storey framework and second-storey slab, are thoughtfully retained and integrated into the new intervention. Rather than erasing the past, the design builds upon it, demonstrating how adaptive transformation can generate meaningful architecture while reducing unnecessary demolition and material waste.
Central to the project is the preservation of family memory. Treasured antique furnishings and heirloom pieces from the previous home are carefully restored and woven into the new interiors, allowing history to remain an active part of daily life. These pieces are not treated as decorative relics but as living artefacts that carry stories across generations, enriching the spatial experience with authenticity and emotional depth.
The interior language draws inspiration from both Balinese and Indian traditions, creating an environment defined by warmth, tactility, and craftsmanship. Natural materials, rich timber detailing, handcrafted elements, and an earthy palette evoke a sense of calm while celebrating the cultural heritage of the homeowners. Every material is selected not only for its beauty, but for the atmosphere it creates—one that is timeless, welcoming, and deeply connected to place.
Throughout the home, daylight, cross ventilation, and greenery are treated as fundamental architectural elements rather than afterthoughts. Spaces are planned to maximise natural light and airflow, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling while fostering a healthier and more comfortable living environment. The resulting interiors feel open, breathable, and intimately connected to the surrounding landscape, reinforcing the project's vision of tropical living.
Ultimately, Attap Recast demonstrates that meaningful architecture is not measured by novelty alone. It lies in the ability to reinterpret tradition with sensitivity, honour family history without becoming nostalgic, and create spaces that evolve alongside the people who inhabit them.
