Set on a pastoral 7.5 ha waterfront site in Suzhou’s high-speed rail new town, the Whittle School & Studios Suzhou Campus redefines the boarding school experience. Designed for 2,500 students, Pre-K through 12, the new purpose-built 119,00sm campus embodies the Whittle philosophy: “learning happens any place, all the time.”
The campus masterplan is informed by external site pressures and internal programmatic forces dividing the site into two distinct zones: a boisterous sport and living zone along the highway edge and a serene academic zone bordering the canal.
- Three discrete “Learning Lanterns”: the early learning center, elementary school and middle/high school are arrayed along the canal to optimize daylight access and views.
- Performing arts and sports functions form a Shared Community Bar building that provides a transitional buffer between sports and the academic zones.
- A spacious Landscaped Plinth defines the heart of school and connects shared community spaces, academics, and sports into one integrated design.
- The Student Dormitory tower is placed along the canal edge at the more private end of the campus main north–south axis.
The architecture draws inspiration from historic Suzhou elements—courtyards, gardens, screens, and loggias—reinterpreted for a contemporary international campus. Signature ultra-high-performance concrete brise-soleil enwraps the façades, controlling daylight, reducing glare, and giving each building a distinctive identity. Ground-level loggias provide sheltered paths, allowing students to circulate comfortably while engaging with the building and landscape.
Designed to meet LEED for Schools Silver and China Greenstar (two-star) standards, the facility provides flexible, high-performance learning spaces throughout to support interdisciplinary, bilingual, and experiential learning.
Through its harmonious integration of local tradition, innovative architecture, and immersive learning environments, the Whittle Suzhou Campus establishes a new benchmark for premier boarding schools in Asia, where every space is an opportunity for discovery, engagement, and meaningful student experiences.
