Canopy by Hilton in Philadelphia is a seamless blend of historic charm and contemporary elegance. Nestled within the iconic Stephen Girard Building, this architectural masterpiece built in 1896 combines the layered past of Philadelphia with modern design sensibilities.
This project was completed in the fourth stage of the East Market development, adding a level of sophistication, elegance, and historical context. In agreement with the Canopy by Hilton’s mission of embracing the local neighborhood and community, many of the new hotel’s ground-floor amenities, including the restaurant and bar, are newly outward-facing, welcoming locals and visitors alike. Its presence within the new surrounding urban fabric is created by restoring and preserving its exterior façades. The architectural lighting design emphasizes the building’s façades and provides street and sidewalk lighting for a safe and welcoming guest experience.
The structure highlights neoclassical architectural elements, with careful restoration and adaptive reuse, the building preserved its historic integrity, allowing guests to step back in time while still enjoying the luxury of modern hospitality. The façades intricate detailing and classical symmetry pay respect to the city’s rich architectural heritage.
When guests enter Canopy by Hilton, they are greeted by a lobby that meets the grandeur of the past with contemporary aesthetics. Serving as a visual testament to the building’s historic significance are details such as the original marble floors, detailed carved moldings, and stately columns were carefully preserved. Modern furnishings and chic decor combined with these classic elements create a welcoming and sophisticated environment.
The guest rooms and suites within Canopy by Hilton demonstrate a commitment to both comfort and style. Vaulted ceilings and large windows highlight breathtaking views of Philadelphia, while art pieces on display celebrate the city’s vibrant cultural scene. The design of the hotel creates a balance between preserving the building’s historic character and providing guests with modern amenities and luxurious comfort.
This project was completed by BLTa prior to their merger with Perkins Eastman.
