Located at Four Gateway Center, Perkins Eastman designed a new headquarters building for the Dickie McCamey Pittsburgh office. This project represents a shift in workplace design, supporting deep connections between attorneys, support teams, and staff. This five-story interior renovation consisted of offices with neighborhood workstations and a centralized amenity, plus a ground-floor conferencing center. Leaving behind layouts with minimal daylight where attorneys worked in isolated offices, the redesign emphasizes the importance of well-being. An environment designed to support the firm for decades to come was created through this renovation.
The building is situated in the Golden Triangle district of Pittsburgh near The Point where the city’s three rivers connect. This location reflects the firm’s commitment to the downtown business district while converting its workplace into a place where employees and clients can feel pride and excitement.
One major advantage of this office is the easy access to public transit, trails, and surrounding businesses. On the ground-floor southeast corner, the lounge and conference center opens into the courtyard and streetscape, providing a venue suited for gatherings and workshops with the community.
Design themes throughout the building include link sight lines, volumes, and architectural details. These themes draw inspiration from Dickie McCamey’s brand, Pittsburgh’s local character, and the modern elegance of Four Gateway Center. Centralized amenity areas ensure that circulation naturally intersects at engagement points. Exposed, acoustically treated ceilings challenge traditional law-firm formality, while thoughtful material shifts, chamfered corners, porcelain-clad walls, and distinctive knife-edge black metal trim create architectural signature moments.
The building’s offset middle creates slim floor plates with visibility on the upper floors. All circulation paths terminate at exterior windows, and corridor glazing allows natural light to flow into the space. Workstations are organized into intimate neighborhoods alongside office modules, ensuring adequate access to daylight while supporting employee interaction and well-being.
Nearly 30 legal practices are accommodated within this building. The design utilizes acoustic solutions and strategic room placement that ensure confidentiality for sensitive operations. This next generation of leadership has embraced strategic interventions that break from traditional law-firm resistance to change. Building on Pittsburgh’s values, these thoughtfully designed spaces accommodate new ways of working and empower teams, strengthening the firm’s identity for generations to come.
