Collaborating with base building architect Square 134, CORE delivered a well-rounded mix of amenity spaces at South Cathedral Mansions: repurposing the cellar as a new fitness center and spa, converting a carriage house into a poolside entertaining space, and renovating the lobby. The project is part of a historic restoration to the apartment buildings to align the property with the expectations of today’s luxury rental market. Located in the rear of the building, the existing carriage house at South Cathedral Mansions presented the greatest opportunity to create a quiet oasis that links the North and South wings of the property. In collaboration with landscape architects, Moody Graham, CORE envisioned a grand indoor/outdoor living space with ultimate flexibility for entertaining. The carriage house was modified so that operable doors on two sides now open entirely to the courtyard and apartment buildings. A well-appointed chef’s demonstration kitchen with a range and dramatic copper hood extends to an outdoor grilling station, overlooking the manicured resort-style pool. The relaxed, chic space was designed with warm woods, concrete, and whites, and beams overhead were exposed, delivering an overall lightness to the space. CORE also provided finish selections and décor for the various residential unit types. The finishes enhance the quality of natural light in the units, and are fresh and neutral. Original heart pine floors were restored where possible, and moldings and trims were selected to recall the original era of the buildings.
