This 1950’s midcentury modern home was in desperate need of a remodel to bring the functionality into the 21st century. While this home was very small, the clients did not want to increase the footprint, but rather increase the usability of the spaces. New work included updates to all the finishes, a completely reworked kitchen and bath, and added multi-function storage spaces. Additionally, a new sliding glass door in the second bedroom/office was added to the exterior, with a folding wall system separating the room from the main living area. This allows the owners to open the entire space to the exterior, but still provides privacy to the bedroom when needed.
The owners were avid collectors, so it was important to provide ample storage including display storage. Built in shelving was provided in each of the bedrooms and living spaces. Additional storage was provided above the shower, in the laundry area, and with the addition of a coat closet. Space and energy saving appliances were selected; this included a washer/dryer combo and an on-demand water heater which were combined with shelves above for use as a laundry room. The master bedroom was separated from the main living spaces for privacy, and could easily be closed off when entertaining. Built in storage (including a projector above the kitchen cabinets) doesn't project into the open areas of the home, helping it feel larger. Similar materials are used throughout (including the same flooring in all areas except the bathroom), providing the remodeled home with a sense of cohesiveness.
The update to the kitchen included new stainless-steel appliances, birch cabinetry, ceramic tile back splash, floating shelves, and concrete counter tops. The cabinetry and shelves provide ample storage for the clients, while all the materials provide a modern aesthetic, without competing with the original home design. The multi-purpose office has a large wall to wall glass sliding door, which provides both a visual and physical connection to the backyard. The large desk does double duty as a dining table for family get-togethers and events. Additional built-in shelves provide additional storage without encroaching into the office.
