Pixar Canada resided over three floors in a 100 year old building in Gastown. Due to the rapid expansion of the company, the project was built in four phases, with relocation and addition of staff upon completion of each phase. Evoke, as lead design consultant, was responsible for all interior design and specifications, consultant coordination, permit applications and construction documents. Programme components included: server room, theatre, meeting rooms, private offices, custom workstations, staff assembly space, lounge space, multi-function space, roof garden, exercise room and washroom and shower facilities.
As a contrast to the existing rusticated concrete structure, only BC woods were specified, lending a distinctly local feel to the space, and a reflection of Pixar’s arrival in Canada. The workstations are built with custom screens utilizing cedar, hemlock and fir, giving the user more space and privacy. Features include the reception wall by Brent Comber and the live edge walnut bar in the kitchen. A new steel and wood stair interconnects the three floors and prominently features well known Pixar characters.
