Set on the remote shores of Nelson Island in British Columbia, the Nelson Island Cabin is an off-grid, compact, and peaceful island retreat. Designed by Peter Brunner, the home was built to make the most of its remote setting while maintaining a connection to the surrounding landscape.
The cabin was constructed from 3 prefabricated, fully furnished modules that were transported to the site by barge. The main house comprises two modules beneath a simple shed roof. The primary module houses the kitchen, dining area, and primary bedroom, while a smaller, connected module contains a shower room and second bedroom. The third module is a small detached guest unit. Inside, the material palette was kept simple and natural, lining the interiors with whitewashed Douglas fir while leaving the structural elements exposed. This combination creates a bright interior that emphasizes the cabin’s relationship to its natural surroundings.
