The Orcas Cabin Retreat is a cozy seaside home blending modern design and natural beauty. This home is constructed from three modules. One module comprises the two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and shared wet room. The second module contains the open living room and kitchen. The third smaller module makes up the entryway. The home’s total construction time, including both factory and on-site work was only 7 months. It was transported from Method’s factory in Ferndale, WA, delivered by ferry, and installed with a mobile crane. Once on-site, the modules were stitched together and finishing touches, such as the cedar deck were built.
Make Ground Design thoughtfully designed this residence to maximize comfort and embrace the surrounding natural charm of the area. Though the home itself is small, it is intentionally oriented to feature expansive views of the Salish Sea from each room, allowing residents to enjoy sunsets and the tranquil coastal atmosphere. Large, energy-efficient windows frame the picturesque views and flood the home with natural light, creating a bright and welcoming feel.
The home’s material choices were nature-inspired, embracing timber and earthy hues. The hemlock ceilings and white oak interior floors bring the feeling of the forest inside. The sliding doors from the central living area to the cedar deck connect the two spaces for easy access and an indoor/outdoor lifestyle.
