Bayphere
The elegant seaside Bayphere Hotel Pattaya is an inspired story of the land providing guests an experiential journey through the creation of a picturesque mangrove forest adjacent to the sea. It’s a literal and figurative walk to the origins — a design inspired by the site’s evolution and the natural phenomena that shaped this idyllic destination. The guest experience showcases both the site’s history and the natural landscape progression from mangrove to beach to sea through sophisticated, upscale design interventions and materiality — providing a storybook patron experience while showcasing the power of inspired landscape design.
Located on the Gulf of Thailand waterfront in Pattaya, this five-star luxury boutique hotel features a multifaceted landscape at the ground floor, rooftop and conveys guests to Jomtien Beach along an elevated boardwalk through the mangrove forest. During the landscape architect’s initial site visit, upon reaching the site’s edge, a lush mangrove forest provided great surprise; it was a hidden gem of serene nature that was largely unknown at the time. The team immediately knew they must preserve and celebrate this peaceful mangrove environment adjacent to the beach — both for its stunning character and green sponge functionality — and it inspired the overall landscape design motif.
The landscape architect team conducted research showing the site was once flat and fully exposed to the sun; a muddy condition disallowed tree survival and rendered it incapable of agricultural usage. Early locals inserted natural bamboo and mangrove tree sticks into the ground, creating oval stalls allowing sand from fluctuating sea water to establish sediment layers; the oval dunes were rich in nutrition, suitable for plant growth and agriculture, and left mudflow patterns around them. In the ensuing decades, lush mangrove forests arose and, with the growth of Jomtien, Choburi, largely from tourism, the land was planned for a seaside hotel. As the Bayphere Hotel Pattaya underwent its initial design process, the landscape design was conceived as a walk to the origins, a processional guest experience articulating the site’s history of land reclamation.
The landscape program features a rooftop pool area with panoramic sea views and a ground floor with open air lobby, leisure seating pod with waterfall and reflecting pond, and feature wall creating layers of space. The ground level character is defined by flowing patterns representing the flow and fluctuation of sea water; oval seating representing the dunes; a bamboo and mangrove stick feature wall showcasing the method of land reclamation; and a shallow pond with sinuous character expressing fluctuating sea water and erosion. The beach and movement of water are represented by hardscape patterning, cascading water and the pop-up jacuzzi; the open sea is celebrated through the panoramic view rooftop pool with seating for leisure moments; and the reflecting pond with seating represents the river and water flowing from upper terrain down to the sea. The landscape design elegantly articulates a gradual changing of space, a seamless composition from architecture to interior to landscape, and an experiential story of the site’s natural processes and history of reclamation.
