Rivo Alto Island Residence: A Miami Beach Home Reimagined for Family Life
Set on Rivo Alto Island in Miami Beach’s Venetian Islands, this complete home remodel transformed a dated and disconnected interior into a cohesive residence designed around family life, cooking, entertaining, children, and pets.
The owners wanted the home to reflect its Miami setting while retaining some of the warmth and character they associated with Texas. Rather than creating a literal Southwestern interior, the design combined natural stone, hand-forged metal, tactile finishes, and comfortable furnishings with a cleaner, more polished Miami sensibility.
The transformation began in the long main living space, where the kitchen occupies one full side of the room and is immediately visible from the expansive foyer. The original island was removed and replaced with a streamlined kitchen bar incorporating open shelving for the owners’ cookbook collection. The Viking refrigerator was repositioned, the sink was moved beneath the window, and a bright white natural stone with bold black veining was carried across the countertops and into a bookmatched backsplash extending to the ceiling.
In the adjoining living room, an informal pebble-stone fireplace was replaced with a floor-to-ceiling lava-ledger-stone fireplace and integrated media wall. The new focal point brought greater scale and sophistication to the room, while the oversized ceiling fan requested by the homeowner introduced a subtle reference to the family’s Texas roots.
The furnishings were selected to soften the expansive open space while supporting the realities of daily family life. A pale performance-fabric sectional accommodates children and pets, complemented by blush and ivory accents, cashmere textiles, sculptural chairs, a silver rayon rug, and a trio of rose-gold cocktail tables with varied marble and metal tops. A hand-forged steel console, paired lamps, and quartz sculptures create a composed transition to the sunken dining room.
Porcelanosa Metropolitan Caliza porcelain flooring replaced the original wood throughout the residence. Its cement-like finish created a continuous foundation that unified the rooms and gave the home a more refined, updated character.
The elongated dining room was arranged with matching sideboards at opposite ends to establish balance and intimacy. A linear crystal pendant hangs above a reclaimed-oak table surrounded by slipcovered performance-fabric chairs chosen for frequent entertaining, children, and extended family gatherings.
In the primary bedroom, a partition wall wrapped in Philip Jeffries chevron-patterned natural wood-chip wall covering creates a warm, tactile backdrop for the bed. Suspended pendants and caviar-pebble nightstands continue the home’s layered use of natural texture and polished detail.
